White House Trail,

Canyon de Chelly National Monument

Distance: 2.7 miles                          Time: 1.5 hours                          Type: There and back

Located in northeastern Arizona in the Four Corners region, Canyon de Chelly is owned by the Navajo Nation and co-managed with the National Park Service. It's a compact place, with two scenic roads along the rim (North and South) providing numerous look-outs over the canyon below. It's not far from Highway 191; you could cover the entire Monument in a few hours and visit on your way travel north to Monument Valley or south to Petrified Forest National Park.

The White House Ruin Trail is the only unaccompanied hike you can do in the Monument and, if you have the time, an opportunity to actually enter the canyon. The trailhead starts 6 miles along the South Rim Drive from the White House Overlook parking area.

The well-maintained, stone path descends nearly 600 feet down the south side of Canyon de Chelly, crosses the seasonal Chinle Wash and ends at a famous ancient dwelling.
