The White House Ruin Trail is the only unaccompanied hike you can do in the Monument and, if you have the time, an opportunity to actually enter the canyon. The trailhead starts 6 miles along the South Rim Drive from the White House Overlook parking area.
The well-maintained, stone path descends nearly 600 feet down the south side of Canyon de Chelly, crosses the seasonal Chinle Wash and ends at a famous ancient dwelling.
